Adult Education

Jews have traditionally seen themselves as a community of learners, continually encountering Jewish texts and transmitting Jewish ideas and values.

B'nai Emunah works hard to ensure that adults in our community have opportunities to learn and grow as Jews. Apart from the basics (sermons, Torah study, etc.), we are partners in Tulsa's Institute of Adult Jewish Studies. In that context, Rabbi Fitzerman works with veterans and beginning students, most notably those who are considering conversion. Our Director of Education, Eliyahu Krigel also teaches in that program, along with many lay volunteers.

Beyond the Institute, we continue to experiment with new opportunities and formats. Rabbi Fitzerman has developed small-group study sessions during the day for many motivated adults. Men and women, working in four separate teams, are currently tackling classic Jewish texts in English translation. This effort borrows from the Kollel model of Jewish learning: the idea of the Synagogue as a Bet Midrash, uniquely focussed on engaging the literary tradtion of the Jewish People.

At the same time, Eliyahu Krigel has developed a new course of study for adult candidates for bar and bat mitzvah. This intensive experience involves weekly sessions in basic Judaism, along with training in  the Shabbat service, Torah, and haftorah chanting.

If you would like to be enrolled in any of these courses (or initiate a group of your own with friends), please contact Rabbi Fitzerman or Eliyahu Krigel at 583-7121.
